Tuesday 11th October in the cafe…

Lots of tasty food was cooked up by our fabulous volunteers today. Our 53 customers really enjoyed it. Here’s what they ordered to eat in or take home for later:

  • 28 portions of mixed vegetable soup
  • 29 portions of chicken pie and vegetables
  • 21 portions of bean stew and pasta, with or without chilli cheese (8 for outside catering)
  • 20 portions of apple toffee pudding
  • 14 portions of torta andalusa (8 for outside catering)
  • 8 portions of fruit salad and yoghurt

£81.95 was given in monetary donations and various people helped out in the kitchen or in other areas of the cafe. A range of food was intercepted – mainly fruit and vegetables.

Friday 7th October in the cafe…

It was another busy day in the cafe. A small team of volunteers worked hard in the kitchen this morning, to cook up some tasty dishes! (Anyone who can help out on a Friday morning, please let us know. We could do with a few more pairs of hands.) The food went done well with our 58 customers. Here’s what they ate in the cafe, or took home for later:

  • 29 portions of marrow and spice soup
  • 39 portions of chicken with pepperoni and paprika
  • 17 portions of lentil and bean bake with cheese
  • 3 portions of sausage roll and salad
  • 31 portions of lemon curdy pudding
  • 7 portions of fruit salad

£83.82 was given in monetary donations and various people helped out in the kitchen. 13.5kg of marrow was intercepted along with some beautiful bread from the Leeds Bread Coop.

Tuesday 4th October in the cafe…

We had a great volunteer team today. They worked hard in the kitchen to produce some tasty dishes, served the food and tidied up, as well as defrosting a freezer and doing some deep cleaning! A massive thank you to you all!

Here’s what our 60 customers ate in the cafe, or took home for later:

  • 19 portions of spiced butternut soup
  • 5 portions of tomato soup
  • 33 portions of vegetable curry and dahl with rice (8 of which were outside catering)
  • 23 portions of Chinese chicken
  • 1 portion of cream cheese sandwich
  • 17 portions of Scandinavian strawberry pudding
  • 15 portions of gluten free chocolate orange brownie
  • 8 portions of fruit salad

£102.58, plus 50 cents in Euros, was given in monetary donations. A range of food was intercepted including spinach, apples and a large quantity of tins from a food bank.

Leeds Urban Harvest did a great job, as always. They juiced another 50L of apple juice from the apples that were donated. Thank you very much to Jenny and the team!

Friday 30th September in the cafe…

Well, it was a great day of celebration yesterday! We had decorations, live music, cake, a market stall and craft activities. It was wonderful to have 70 people in the cafe to celebrate with us.

Here’s what was ordered to eat in or take home for later:

  • 31 portions of mushroom soup
  • 28 portions of ratatouille and jacket potato
  • 12 portions of meat free haggis balls with tomato sauce and pasta
  • 26 portions of vegetable curry and dahl
  • 37 portions of apple crumble
  • 10 portions of fruit salad

…3 cakes were consumed as well – chocolate cake, honey tea bread (gluten free) and a madeira cake, plus lots of buffet style nibbles.

A range of food was donated during the day, including 10kg of coleslaw, lots of houmous, salad and bread.

Tuesday 27th September in the cafe…

We had a great day in the cafe today, where despite there being limited food, lots of delicious dishes were created. Our volunteers worked hard as a team to make them all.

Here’s what our 39 customers ate in the cafe or took home for later:

  • 25 portions of marrow and celery soup
  • 11 portions of vegetarian pizza with puff pastry base
  • 13 portions of Mediterranean couscous with fish
  • 14 portions of pasta with tomato sauce and cheese
  • 19 portions of toffee sponge pudding
  • 7 portions of fruit salad
  • 10 portions of homemade rice pudding
  • 11 portions of cranberry and apricot flapjack

£74.96 was given in monetary donations and lots of people helped out in the kitchen and with the clearing up.

A huge thank you to everyone who supported the cafe today! A few customers said how much they valued the cafe team at lunchtime. However I reminded them that they were just as important, as they create the community in the cafe.

Friday 23rd September in the cafe…

It was a quieter day in the cafe today, with 35 customers. Here’s what they ordered to eat in or take away:

  • 16 portions of roasted root vegetable soup
  • 20 portions of chicken casserole and rice
  • 12 portions of chicken nuggets
  • 4 portions of meat free schnitzel
  • 15 portions of apple crumble
  • 12 portions of sticky toffee pudding
  • 3 portions of fruit salad

Tuesday 20th September in the cafe…

We had great fun in the cafe today – juicing apples and pears, making pizza dough, and chopping up lots of vegetables for the curry. Jess was helping us in the kitchen, as well as preparing food for an outside event.  The wonderful volunteers worked hard as a team, to produce all of the tasty dishes.

Here’s what our 58 customers ordered to eat in the cafe or take home for later:

  • 15 portions of courgette soup
  • 31 portions of wholemeal chicken pizza
  • 32 portions of mixed vegetable curry and dahl
  • 21 portions of fruit crumble (peach or apple)
  • 12 portions of bread and butter pudding
  • 8 portions of fruit salad

£61.70 was given in monetary donations, many people helped in the kitchen, and others helped with the juicing. Lots of food was intercepted today, including more than 15kg of courgettes!

Leeds Urban Harvest collected a fair amount of fruit to press. In total they produced 50 litres of freshly squeezed apple juice and 10 litres of pear juice. It’s always brilliant to have this juice that we can hand out to customers on a PAYF basis. Thank you very much to Jenny and the team!

It’s been a wonderful, busy day in the cafe today. We’ve had Jambo and Nathan catering for Trjfp events and then the usual team cooking for today.

Tuesday 13th September in the cafe…

It was a wonderful day in the cafe today. We had 8 volunteers who worked really well as a team. They produced some delicious food for today, as well as helping to prepare for tomorrow’s menu. It’s always a blessing when people are so productive! Here’s what our 50 customers ordered today, to eat in or take away:

  • 12 portions of roasted pepper soup
  • 25 potions of cheese and kale, or ham and tomato quiche
  • 17 portions of egg and/or houmous salad
  • 4 portions of fajitas
  • 4 portions of sprout, potato, onion and bacon rosti
  • 7 portions of apple crumble
  • 12 portions of fruit salad
  • 12 portions of summer fruits, or summer fruits Eton mess

£74.96 was given in monetary donations and a number of people helped out in the kitchen, garden and cafe area.

Friday 9th September in the cafe…

It was a great day in the cafe today. We had some wonderful volunteers, who worked hard to serve our 44 customers, as well as washing up all the plates, cutlery, pots and pans! Plus we had Jambo in the kitchen, who was preparing for a buffet and the bistro this evening.

Here’s what was ordered to eat in the cafe or take home for later:

  • 6 portions of root vegetable soup
  • 19 portions of broccoli soup
  • 19 portions of mushroom risotto
  • 19 portions of turkey, roast potatoes and vegetables
  • 6 portions of houmous and egg salad

  • 13 portions of meringue with summer fruit and yoghurt

£88.37 was given in monetary donations and various people helped out in the kitchen and garden.

There was lots of artisan bread on offer today in the food boutique, which came from the Leeds Bread Coop. We also had the usual selection of fresh fruit and vegetables. It is really good to see people making use of all of this food which would otherwise have gone in the bin.
